SUUBI!

A couple months ago I heard about SUUBI from some friends who knew that I would appreciate it both as art and as a way to give. A project from the non-profit Light Gives Heat, SUUBI is a rad little community program started by some twenty-somethings who traveled to Africa to adopt their daughter and came across a great way to help women in Uganda.

So, SUUBI?

SUUBI is the Lugandan word for HOPE. The selling of their artwork provides Hope to women in Uganda. Here's what the SUUBI website says about their goals...

HOPE is the essence of the Suubi (hope) project and our vision is two-fold:

1) The Suubi (hope) project is about creating consistent weekly incomes in otherwise unemployable areas in Uganda through the purchasing and reselling of these hand-make necklaces. Thus, allowing for women to provide food and pay school fees for their children.

2) In Uganda, we have been shown a HOPE that doesn't make sense and has changed everything. Therefore, we simply want to spread HOPE - sharing the stories of these amazing women and getting people across the world to look outside of themselves and respond creatively.

So, I was excited. I bought a necklace and then learned about the spread campaign. It's a way that I'm able to get more involved and give you the opportunity to join me. It's not just about getting a cool, handmade piece of African art (although that's awesome) it is a great way to raise awareness and give back! SUUBI sent me a supply of necklaces to offer. Here's the great options I've got...
$20.oo - Long multi-colored necklace, can be worn double, tripled or even as a bracelet, sweet stuff!

$15.oo - Slim version of the multi-colored necklace. I love this one, also really long and super versatile.

$10.oo - The choker version, great for guys or girls!

Perfect for gift giving!

So, here's the deal. I'm all about alternative Christmas. I've been giving you bits and pieces, but a full explanation is on it's way. SUUBI is a great way to get involved. Buy a necklace (or two or three) for gifts this year and help give to those need it most!

I've got a limited supply so, if you would like to purchase some SUUBI, or have questions please e-mail me... simplespiel@gmail.com, and I'll get you all fixed up! And if you can't afford to help this year, your prayers and spreading of the word would be amazing. Tell your friends about SUUBI! Share some hope this holiday!

P.S. My goal is to get 'em sold by Christmas...let's do it!

Farewell.

Vacation is almost over, just a few hours to go. It's been grand, I have a lot to share and alternative Christmas to catch up on. I'm leaving on a jet plane bound of Vegas in a few hours. My goal is to win enough moo-lah (during my two hour lay over), so I can quit my job and keep up my blogging habit. Wish me luck.

Note to self:

When in an airport restroom stall DO NOT for any reason put your backpack on the floor while you pee in the event that there is not a hook on the back of the door. And if you do happen to put it on the floor please refrain from putting on your back when you leave. Cause what is on the floor is now on your North Face jacket, gross.

What I don't want for Christmas & What You Shouldn't Buy Anyone, Ever.

I'm flying today. Currently, I'm sitting in a semi-quiet corner in the San Jose airport waiting for my connecting flight. My trip from Portland to San Jose was pretty uneventful. I caught up on some magazine reading and did a bit of SkyMall looking. I have to say I love the catalog. It is pure entertainment to me. It is the prime example of consumerism gone crazy. It's the place to look for a gift to give simply because you are obligated, gifts that are completely unnecessary yet oddly useful, I've decided to share a few of my favorite finds.

Embellished 1GB USB Drive

Everyone needs a little bling! I don't know about you, but after seeing this little piece of technology couture I am embarrassed by my average looking USB drive. You may want to make this classy upgrade, and it will only cost you $75.oo. What a deal.

The Sweet Machine

The SkyMall description of this little box 'o fun says that "everyone loves the claw game!". Really? I happen to think it is a money stealing jerk face that I can never succeed at. Some why in the world would I want to pay $69.95 to have one in my home? But if you just gotta have another thing to consume your time and exercise your hand/eye coordination, go for it.

Living XL Portable Chairs
These camping chairs may look typical. But, no. They are XL camping chairs making it possible for those up to 800 pounds to enjoy the great outdoors. These chairs would definitely come in handy if I gain 670 pounds and still want to keep up an active outdoor lifestyle. I mean really, I wouldn't want to let my weight get me down. And the built in cup holders for my Jamba Juice are a real plus.

King Tutankhamen's Egyptian Throne Chair

Indulge this holiday with a little bit of Egyptian history. Some may view this piece as a little over the top, but I say every room needs a little gold gaudy. Order 2 for even more class. Seriously, I would love to know how many of these sell.

And last but not least, my favorite of all favorites.

JUMPIN' JAMMERZ

Christmas PJs are not just for kids thanks to these footed pajamas! I was lured in by this product not so much because of it's nostalgic nature but mostly by it's hot marketing campaign. Check out that picture again. Those peeps are loving their Jammerz! I mean really, loads of fun is going on. I can't imagine being a model who gets that job.

I know these items are extreme examples but it sure helps to illustrate the point of ridiculousness that Christmas gift giving has come to. I did however find one good gift. Not in the SkyMall but in my Domino mags I read (a design favorite).

Chocolates for a Cause! Check 'em out here. These super rad bonbons are infused with a traditional Africa flavor and are pretty cute too! Plus, each purchase includes a Relief Beads bracelet to help support hungry women and children in Darfur!

I will be posting more about Christmas, I've got a lot to say. But until then, enjoy the holiday preparation, it will be here before we know it!

Cheers!

CAN.NOT.WAIT.

Sunday, November 30, 2008

I've been thinking, writing, talking a lot lately about waiting. Waiting in anticipation while living where I am. Looking ahead while pouring into what I have now. I've been eager to get going and yet content where I am. It's a great feeling to know that there is always more, that the plan is ever unfolding. Being content is a constant struggle in my life, especially when I feel my heart pulled in specific directions, to places that I know little about and have no idea how I will get there. And, I believe that dreams have been born in me for a reason, with a bigger picture in mind. I'm learning that patience is genius, the Lord's timing and will are perfect, and His blessings are far greater than I realize!

One thing He has blessed me with are like-minded friends who help to spur me on to greater things. I am beyond excited to see how the Lord is using my friends to share his grace and hope with others, not just here in Mac but all over the world. Many of you know my friends Tyson and Tracy. Or if you read my blog enough you probably feel like you do! :) They are not only my neighbors but some of my favorites, and parents to Kai, who is one amazing kid that I can't seem to get enough of! Although I am beyond sad to see them go I am so excited for the Smith's new adventure to Peru. They have accepted a position with Extreme Nazarene and will be leaving in February for Peru! It's been really amazing to see all the Lord has provided and continues to provide to them as they prepare for the next two years. I'll be posting more about Tyson, Tracy and Kai soon, but until then if you want to learn more about their trip or give to get them there click here or check out their blogs here and here .

Love, love, love you guys!

I love a party!

Thank you to all of you "Holiday Shopping Affair" shoppers! We had a great night, sold a few things, but most importantly got to be together!

Thanks Madre and Calitlin for the food...it was all super delish!

Leslie, Jenna and Abby, it was so good to be with you all, thanks for sharing your time and talents!

Miss Tracy, thank you, thank you for all your hard work to make the night happen. And don't worry, I will still love you, even if you burn down the house! :)

P.S. Miss Erin, I assume that you will read this blog. :) It was great to meet you (and your mom & sis) can't wait to see the new house!

Social Security and You.

Today Tracy and I went on a random trip to Salem. We braved the social security office. Our goal was to obtain Kai's social security number for his passport application. And in addition to the number, we obtained a pretty entertaining people watching session.

I honestly have no idea where my social security card is. I am a bit sensitive about it. My sweet madre let me sign the darn thing when I was in fifth grade. You know, that all important time in your life when you are establishing how your handwriting will be set apart from others. I, at the tender age of 10ish decided that I should always, always sign my name with a tiny, bubbly heart dotting the i in Melissa. And that folks is how I signed, proudly, boldly, in blue pen, my social security card. Bummer. So, it became important for me to attend college where I was forced to memorize my SSN for a wide variety or reasons. Some days I think it is the most important, or only thing I learned in those four years. And even if I never use my degrees I will be grateful that we paid thousands and thousands of dollars so I don't have to pull out the slightly worn, heart dotted card, which will always serve as a reminder of my tendency as a child to do all I could to bug my mom long enough until I got my way. Sorry Madre!

Until today I would say that my favorite places to people watch were airports and DMVs but today numero 3 was added. I found myself wondering if I really do experience stranger things than most peeps or if I simply look for the strange everywhere I go. After some careful soul searching I believe the latter to be true. I also came to the conclusion that I may in fact be a big jerk, really, is it ok for me to find enjoyment in laughing at others? That one is still up for debate. So in this careful deliberation time I'll take the opportunity to tell you about today's experience.

For those of you who have never had the grand privilege of going to your local social security office I don't what you to feel left out. Here's what you may experience.

Let's see if I can paint you a word picture. Because, the security guard (who had to inspect our purses as we entered) informed a guy sitting near us (with an amazing grey ponytail, you know the kind with 15 or so rubber bands around various parts of the pony, holding in all the hair and making it virtually impossible for a stray hair to sneak out.) that it is illegal to take pictures in federal buildings. Whatev.

Intense ponytail man was instructed to erase the pictures from his cell phone. bummer. I'll never know what the picture was but I have a pretty good idea or about a baker's dozen, they were all around us, big man with really obnoxious Big Dog brand t-shirt, fidgety lady with entirely too much paper work, bloomers and ski mask guy, awkward sunglasses wearer and super fast motorized wheelchair driver. Ahhh, endless possibilities.

So, we sit and begin to survey our surroundings. Let's start with security guard JoBob-a-roo. Tell me, why is it that security guards are all about standing with their hands on their hips? Is that power stance suppose to be intimidating? If so I think this guy needs some lessons on what cancels out the power stance's intimidation factor. 1.) Taking long, frequent swigs of your soda while on the job. AND 2.) Sitting at a tiny desk under a television that plays (on a loop) random video footage of a duck and her ducklings floating down a nearly stagnant river. This guy was classic, and really he has a big job. He has to ask each person who comes in if they have any guns or pocket knives on them, instruct people how to use the computer touch screen that prints out your number and generally put up with the crazies.

As I looked around I tried to come up with stories about why each person was there. But nothing could prepare me for awkward sunglasses wearer. Maybe I should rename him lazy sunglasses wearer. In he struts, faded black dress pants, complete with pleats, black and purple printed rayon shirt tucked in tight, long dark trench coat (he could have had a gun, or seven in there) milk chocolate colored hair a bit frizzy, reaching about the middle of his back, he was a sight for sore eyes. But my favorite part, the part that gives him the nickname is the sunglasses. Not really worn on his head, not down around his neck. No, just resting on his forehead right above his eyebrows. So, if an unexpected ray of light, sun, laser beam, what-have-you happened to enter his field of vision his shades would be in place with nothing more than a simple nod of his head. Glorious.

Mr. Security JoBob also had to put the smack down on fidgety lady with entirely too much paper work who just kept busy shuffling around the office, her arms full of files. At one point she sat down at one of the desks that was closed and he informed her that she had to move in fear that she was copying down other's SSNs. What? Was that the desk where they just have random SSNs posted, what in the world? The thing is she wasn't any closer to those being helped (maybe revealing personal information) than we were. But rules are rules and Mr. Security JoBob is not to be messed with.

Moral of the story, the social security office is the new airport. I highly recommend it for your future people watching needs. I may head back soon to see if I can get a new copy of my card, a fresh card to sign, moving forward from my fifth grade tendencies, I'm going to start practicing my signature now.

These are a few of my favorite things...

I once was a girl in a white dress with a blue satin sash. Seriously. My madre has pictures of it all over her house. The details are a little sensitive. Let's just say the wearing of the dress may/or may not have involved an event that included a physical fitness routine, judges interview, pose and appearance and the dreaded talent portion. Yes, you've got it. But really, it was not a pageant, it was a scholarship program! And yes, I wore a white dress with a blue satin sash...it was amazing. I love that dress. Maybe because it was made just for me by Dr. Awesome in the southern California sweatshops of Corona in just two days. Maybe it was the realization that a language barrier is no barrier for fashion and he knew exactly what I was wanting. Whatever it was, the dress is one of my favorite things.

So, I decided to make a list of my favorite things recently and quickly discovered that a majority of my favorite things are not "things" at all. Most of them are experiences, moments and mostly people. One weekend last month I experienced three of my favorites (one thing, two people).

Two of my favorite people: Aunt Cece and Uncle Brian
One of my favorite things: GlassyBaby

My Aunt Cece and Uncle Brian made their yearly trek to the great Northwest and this year it included a stop in Mac-Town. We had a great time checking out the sights, eating the local food, and enjoying the fall weather. We even hit up Roloff Farms (you know, from Little People, Big World)! I like to think I dazzled them with my knowledge of the area and superior sense of direction. Too bad I don't speak with an English accent like that lady on their GPS.

They also brought me an amazing new GlassyBaby called Seattle Sunset.
I know this sounds a bit obsessive but really, until you have seen a GlassyBaby in all it's glory you have no place to judge. Check out their website here. One of the great things about this company is that they consistently donate portions of each sale to various cancer and cancer research foundations. Woot-woot! Another great thing about them is that the know a good people when they see 'em. Yeah, not only did my aunt and uncle check out the studio but they made friends and were featured on the GlassyBaby blog! Read more here.

Thanks Aunt Cece and Uncle B for spending time in Mac. The town will never be the same. And guess what...the countdown is on! See ya'll in 19 days!

It's The Little Things.

Oregon is by mail voting state. This is the first year since I turned 18, that I have lived where I am voting. Meaning, that for the past ten years I have been a boring absentee voter. But not this year! I was stoked...until I found out that the entire state of Oregon votes by mail. No strange little old men showing you where to sign and directing you to a voting booth, no possibility of hanging chads, and especially no "I Voted" stickers. I've never had one of my own, only hand-me-downs from my Madre when I was little. Truth be told, I'm pretty bummed, I was looking forward to my very first sticker. Maybe they should include them in with the ballots next time. Maybe they should employ me to stuff the envelopes with stickers. I would no doubt do it proudly. Come on Oregon, people pump our gas, why not crate a few jobs for sticker stuffers! And that folks, is what I aspire to.

Happy election (or happy the election is finally almost over) to all of you!

P.S. To those of you still receiving stickers for your votes. Don't take them for grated, not all of us has the luxury of them, so wear them proudly! And if you get an extra...send it my way!

Cha-Cha-Changes

I love changes, really I do, but this one I'm not ready for. I shouldn't say that, I'm ready for a change but not all the work, worry and stress that seems to go along with this type of change. I admit that I haven't really paid much attention to all the hullabaloo going on with the economy, it hadn't affected me too directly until last night. I was laid off due to the fact that my boss can no longer pay my check. Seriously. I'm not taking it personally, I get it. And it wasn't my dream job but it was a job, one that was a long time coming.

So I'm not too sure what direction to go in...where to go from here. I know there is a plan, but I'm not too sure where to start.

Today I got a call from a friend who is finishing grad school and will be looking for a job soon. He called to ask if we could make a little deal between the two of us to hold one another accountable to look for 3 jobs this week that we would really love. What perfect timing! I hadn't told him about the job loss yet but he has been a big advocate the last few years that I am bigger than what I have been doing with my time and talent. So, here we are on the job hunt together.

I keep going back to what I would love, love to do, and the unknown of how it all would work, if I would make enough money to live on and the fear of failure. I'd love your prayers for clarity in the face of decision, provision and peace.

What wouldn't I do for the blog.

On Saturday I had a classic blog-worthy experience. It's funny how I now go through life aware of the blogging possibilities of my activities. I remember once a friend who was huge into scrap booking told me that she now takes specific pictures knowing that they would be good for a scrapbook layout. And,although I don't seek out crazy situations for you, my beloved blog audience, I don't shy aware from a potentially shady fiasco where a good story could be born.

This Saturday was classic. I'm on the hunt for a new computer...think I'm really ready to do the big switch-a-roo to Mac so I headed to the Mac store to do some research. I get to Bridgeport, my favorite mall in the area. It's an outdoor mall, with some pretty fantastically dangerous stores, which I mostly window shop. On the way there I caught a glimpse of my eyebrows in the rear view mirror. Wow, how long had I been living like this? Then I remembered that 3/4 of the little round bulbs in my bathroom above the mirror are burnt out. I wonder what else I've been missing...

So, I decide to stop in at the salon at Bridgeport to have my eyebrows waxed. I learned my lesson last time I went to the mall and has this done that the timing of the much needed wax is crucial. All shopping, looking, ordering of Jamba Juice and general walking around the mall must be finished prior to the wax. Shopping first, looking next, pick up a smoothie, get waxed and then make a beeline to the car. No stopping, no looking in the direction of others, no taking it personally when people take the long way around me. I have to keep in mind that my entire eyebrow area is fire red, a little swollen and maybe, just maybe I look like something that could be see on Star trek. You know, those unfortunate guys with the bumpy, protruding eyebrow bone.

I enter the Salon, a Barbie looking girl takes my name and tells me to return in an hour...perfect. When I get back to the salon for my appointment Barbie takes me back to meet the esthetician. Now, Barbie, other than being completely too tan and over bleached seems completely normal and treats the situation completely normal. I trust Barbie. Sure, she's a little overdone but really, she seems like someone I can trust when it comes to this sort of thing. She shows me where to sit and then she says it.

"Pierre will be with you in a minute...you are going to love him, he's the best."

"Great!" I'm thinking, Pierre, sounds so French, so official. Somehow when it comes to the salon situation being foreign gives him an edge in my mind. I trust a foreign guy with my eyebrows any day...he's the best (according to Barbie).

A moment later Pierre appears.

Not a lick over 5 feet he is shorter than me (which is hard to do), he has the most amazing faux-hawk, almost black with tiny blond (ok, they really look yellow) tips. Amazing. But that's not the best of it. The guy has...

...a unibrow.

Seriously, this is the guy who will be waxing my eyebrows? Does he not see his own? Is he going to make me look perma-surprised? What??? Oh, Pierre! For a split second I think about grabbing my bag and making a run for it. Really, I think I could do it...he couldn't catch me. 1. His legs are shorter 2. His is wearing three belts, that extra weight would slow him down and 3. He has a unibrow, not exactly the most aerodynamic facial hair choice.

But, then I thought of my blog, and the story that could be told. And that maybe, just maybe Pierre really is the best. I don't want to miss out on the best. And hey, I was prepared to go directly to my car, my shopping was done. So, I stayed. I sucked it up and Pierre did a great job. He told me that I have a fabulous natural arch to my brows and that my skin was a color he had always envied. HA! Pierre and I had a great talk. I asked about how he got into the business, etc. I even asked about the three belts, which he says is a European flair that he just comes by naturally (whatever). But I couldn't get up the courage to ask him about the unibrow. I don't know what got into me folks, I froze.

And that, that is what I wouldn't do for the blog. I wouldn't question a tiny male ethetician about his unibrow. I let that moment pass. And I am oh, so sorry.

Don't you just love it...

...when your birthday is extended with unexpected gifts. A good friend from college surprised me yesterday with some clean water for Charity:Water! Yea! I sent him a quick text to thank him and last night I got this response: "The economy may suck...but we are still f'n blessed." Amen to that! (Is it appropriate to say amen to a statement that includes an abbreviation of a curse word?)

Whatever the case we are blessed, more than most of us will ever understand. Sure, we can practice being selfless, we can give what we have, even give our time, our lifestyle, our comforts. But for us it is a choice, poverty for the sake of others that is. It isn't something that we were born into or stricken with. What an amazing, undeserved gift we have been given. I'm currently reading Melissa Faye Green's book There Is No Me Without You, talk about good stuff...I'm only part way in and I've had tears the entire time. I can't imagine the daily burdens that this amazing foster mother in Ethiopia deals with. I can't put it down. Check it out here. But, be aware, it's a serious call to action. The knowledge you will gain on the AIDS epidemic in Africa is startling. Dig in!

Simple Spiel Update: I'm taking this forced slow down time to decide exactly how this is all going to work. I had a great convo on Tuesday with a smarty-pants friend of mine who has agreed to get me started on the business portion of turning Simple Spiel into a outlet to help others. Yea for Smarty-McGoo-Sauce-business-minded friends! So, we are praying for connections to be made with the right people as I do research into where to send profits, and that the Lord will grow this dream of mine into what He desires for it. Thanks for the continued support!

Cheers!

So glad.

Elisabeth Elliot is one of my heroes, an amazing writer, understander of the woman's heart, lover of all, fearless in her mission, her words are of continual encouragement to me. Today I read her daily devotional titled "The Supremacy of Christ". It was so what I needed to hear today. Seems like I have heard it a million times before but I needed it again...

The first thing was to settle once and for all the supremacy of Christ in my life, I tell them. I put myself utterly and forever at His disposal, which means turning over all the rights: to myself, my body, my self-image, my notions of how I am to serve my Master. Oswald Chambers calls it "breaking the husk of my individual independence of God." Until that break comes, all the rest is "pious fraud." I tell these earnest kids that the will of God is always different from what they expect, always bigger, and, ultimately, infinitely more glorious than their wildest imaginings.

See, when it seems to me like everything is falling apart, or nothing adds up, and I can't imagine good...it's coming, I am promised good, and I am so glad!

To read Elisabeth's devo click here.

*!$@*%! is feels good to be a gangsta.

F.Y.I.:The title of this post comes from a song in my top ten worst songs ever...that somehow become your worst favorites, and is featured on the movie Office Space (and has been censored for my Madre).

This almost happened at my house last night. Sure, I don't have a bat, or three guys wearing ties to help me beat up my computer and printer but I have been known to throw down a pretty mean "copy machine kick" (a phrase coined from the scene pictured above) just ask Glaze. Next time you see me ask for a demonstration, I will gladly give you one. It's the sort of thing you have to see, believe me. The length of the legs has nothing to do with it.

It's semi-funny but not really. Simple Spiel is just chillin' till I can work through the technical difficulties. So, where to go from here? Truth be told, I'm pretty bummed, I was ready to roll with the new line. I was gaining direction about where the money was to be sent and how I should focus the profits from the new cards. But now it's on a standstill until this glitch gets figured out. I'm a firm believer that there is a plan, I'm just eager to see what it is! Would love your prayers...not only for the success of the new cards and those that will be reached from their profits but also that some miraculous will go down with the darn computer situation.

Happy Tuesday!

When there are no words.

I find that music works best...other people's words. Peeps more poetic than myself. Here's what I need to hear today. Yes, it's old school. Brings back memories of college but today it has new meaning. It's hopeful.

So, what do ya think?

She's right.

A friend, who shall remain nameless, told me today that I need to update my blog a little. Turns out my polka dot default background is so 2007ish. I thought I was retro, but whatev. She speaks the truth in love. So, I'm working on it. I happen to be a bit of a perfectionist so stick with me as I switch, switch-a-roo!

Dear nameless friend,
You were right. I let my blog design slip, it's defaultedness did not reflect who I really am and what my blog is about. Thanks for being an honest friend and for calling me on my lack of motivation.

It's here!

Yippee, Skippy! Yeah, I really just said that. Shoot. But it's here and I'm excited! All the glorious RECYCLED kraft paper for my new line of cards. Simple Spiel is going all out in the charity department. Look for more details soon!

Blessed.

I have amazing friends, seriously legit friends who I am blessed by left and right. It's cool how sometimes friendships just click. My time in Mac has not been long yet I have found friends who I feel like I've known forever. It was great to spend my birthday this year with Trac, Caitlin and Nicole. Nicole and I share the same birthday and I was so excited to celebrate with her! Trac and Caitlin planned an amazing day for us complete with hours of shopping and a wonderful happy hour at Portland City Grill with great food, yummy drinks and a rad view of the city! Thank you ladies for a wonderful "golden birthday"!

*A big woot-woot to Trac who is officially our photographer...she rocks the house!

If you have kids, like kids, or once was a kid!

Here's a last minute way to help some kiddos. Kids Lake is on it's last day of fund raising for AHope!

Here's what my friend Brandi (Kids Lake director) says about their organization:
Kids LAKE is a campaign to help kids all "pitch in" to make a difference in our world! The challenge for kids is to raise, earn or save money every month to be able to send to kids around the world so they may know God's Love. Every month, we'll feature a different organization that we'll be raising money for. This way, kids can not only make a difference through their donations, but also through their prayers! Every month we'll give you lots of details and stories of the country, kids and organization we are raising money for so you can use it as an educational tool!

So this month they are working with AHope to help kiddos in Africa who have or have been affected by HIV and AIDS, how cool is that? Their goal is $1300 and so far they have raised $947...awesome...and oh so close! Please think and pray (quick) about being a part!

As an added bonus they had great shirts (in all sizes) and sweet bracelets made up for all who donate, to thank you, raise awareness and help us remember to pray. Check, check 'em out here.

Head over to the Kids Lake blog to read more about their mission and how you can get involved!

It's a revolution...and we're starting one mailbox at a time.
